Last week I finished a quilt top for a friend’s baby. I’m rather late with this quilt – the baby’s 3 months old… but maybe it’s better late than never, no?

Here it is:

It’s a New York quilt for a New York boy of a New Yorker mom – I always think of her as the real New Yorker among us. And his coming to be caused a lot of upheaval… hence the bursts of stars. (Please excuse the terrible photo. My children – and dog and cat-  grab, plant themselves square in the middle of, chew on, anything I try to lay out for the purpose of photographing when they’re alert and awake. That leaves mostly just the nighttime for photographs. Which is not great for lighting.)

I love this quilt top but I’m still not sure how I’ll quilt it. The backing will be pieced out of some of the fabrics in the quilt top design, and some stars that did not fit. I plan to free motion quilt a kind of stipple pattern with little stars all over the background, and stitch in the ditch around the stars. I love free motion quilting but I’m not anywhere near as good at it as I’d like. But the baby’s 3 months old so… I think it’s time to get over myself.
